The PSAT, or preliminary SAT, scheduled for October 17, would have been one of the first in-person events held by Berkeley High School since its shutdown in March, and somewhat of a trial run for the school’s COVID-19 precautions.
At this point in the COVID-19 pandemic, Berkeley High School students have adapted to conducting most aspects of their lives online. While seeing friends, classmates, and teachers exclusively over Zoom has become the norm, one aspect of school that has not translated effectively to remote learning is the athletics program.
Fields, pools, and bleachers have sat empty on the Berkeley High School campus since March. Although a return to in-person classes is looking more likely in Berkeley, the future of BHS athletics is still shrouded in uncertainty. In early September the BHS Athletic Directors shared a potential plan for a return to practices.
When Berkeley High School closed in March, no one knew how long it would be before students could return to the hallways, people, and beloved lunch spots that are part of an in-person education at BHS.
On July 20, a historic moment took place when Alyssa Nakken became the assistant coach of the San Francisco Giants, making her the first ever female coach in Major League Baseball. Similar to most other sports, baseball has historically not been a welcoming place for women.
Whether it be because of access to technology, being in a caregiver position, or being an essential worker, across school districts it has become clear that while “we’re all in this together,” some students are clearly better equipped for distance learning than others.
Election signs litter the hallways, accounts for various candidates suddenly start showing up on your Instagram feed, and the perennial question is, “who are you voting for?” Welcome to election season at Berkeley High School.
