Ducks’ Sabrina Ionescu Shines

By Gunner Lee, March 21st, 2020

The University of Oregon women’s basketball team, ranked among the top teams in the nation, has been dismantling every team in sight. The Oregon Ducks are boasting a 24-2 overall record and sitting at the top of the Pac-12 Conference. However, while basketball is a team sport, the Ducks wouldn’t be anywhere near where they are without senior point-guard Sabrina Ionescu. The Walnut Creek native has not only stolen multiple National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Pac-12 records, but is the projected number one overall pick in the 2020 Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) draft and has made her case as one of the best college basketball players in history. In her time at the University of Oregon, Ionescu has won the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) National Freshman of the Year, two Pac-12 Player of the Year awards, two Nancy Lieberman Awards, and many other trophies. On top of her impressive list of awards, the Oregon point-guard is now the NCAA all-time triple-double leader and the Pac- 12 all-time assist leader.

The Ducks have now completed yet another season milestone in the PAC-12 tournament championship with the help of Ionescu, and while taking home this championship is no small feat, the Ducks have their eyes set on the big trophy in the NCAA tournament. It seems that Ionescu knows nothing but winning as of now, and her resume provides more than enough to back it. As Ionescu continues to light up the floor with filled stat sheets and commanding wins, her path to being a WNBA superstar is becoming clearer and clearer. The NCAA tournament will be the most difficult challenge for the Ducks this year, but regardless, Sabrina Ionescu undoubtedly has many more years of basketball in her future.
