How to: Stay entertained in rainy weather

By Zoe Whitman, January 23rd, 2026

Cook a nice meal — Try out that new recipe you haven’t had the time for. Everyone needs to eat, and being stuck inside away from the rain is the perfect time to attempt something more elaborate.

Take a long hot bath with bath salts or a rubber duck. Allow yourself to relax and take a break with no goal. Put on some music or light a candle and allow yourself to rest.

Play dress up! “Fancy Nancy” who? Make new outfits with the clothes you never wear abandoned at the back of your closet. You can invite your friends and make a fashion show out of it. Document all the best outfits and you can wear them the next week at school.

Finish that show you started a year ago. Whether it is because you just got too busy or because you started a new show and forgot about the old one, the show stuck on your “continue watching” section probably deserves a second chance, so give it a go.

Take up a new hobby like knitting or drawing, learn something new. You can go onto blogs detailing how to pick up new hobbies with sewing patterns or drawing tutorials to get you started.

Listen to music with focus. Put on an album you love or have never heard before and just listen to it. Take notes on your thoughts for each song and what you think about the album as a whole. Find your favorite and least favorite song and write about why that is.

Journal about the rain and how your life is going. Journaling can prove to be a meditative activity that allows you to reflect on where you currently are in life. If you feel stuck you can start with a list of journaling prompts to answer and go from there.

Make a hot chocolate! ... or tea … or coffee … or whatever hot beverage strikes your fancy. Warm drinks will heat you from the inside and create a nice cozy atmosphere while staying away from the rain outside.

Take photographs of the rain and scenery or have your friends over for a photoshoot of your own. Experiment with different cameras or your phone camera setting to get different effects. You can even edit all of the photos so they fit a cohesive theme or add fun props to make the photos your own.

Do a crossword or sudoku or complete a puzzle. These fun brain games can help your mind stay fit for years to come and are just fun. You can do all of these online with apps or websites built with fun themes and clues or you could do it the old fashioned way and get a crossword from the newspaper, a sudoku book, and a million piece puzzle to complete.

Go outside, run around in the rain! While many people hide away inside when it is raining you might enjoy frolicking in the storm. You never know until you try!

Sleep, get the must-needed rest every student is desperate for. Put an eyemask on, make yourself an herbal tea, put on some jazz, and get ready to sleep at least the full eight hours.
