Word on the street: What is your favorite part of spring?

Stephanie Huynh
By Catarina Newman, April 24th, 2026

The abundance of art is Stephanie Huynh’s favorite part of spring. Huynh is a Berkeley High School sophomore who grew up watching her sister in the arts. “I just really like watching her sing, dance and express herself through art,” Huynh said,“During spring, a lot of … arts contests and performances are happening around here. It’s just really fun to see.” One of Huynh’s favorite activities in spring is exploring the Bay Area and the rest of California.

Zephyr Stackhouse

Freshman Zephyr Stackhouse likes spring because of the daily variation in the weather. “My favorite part of spring is how much the weather varies, and throughout the week, it can rain and be sunny at the same time,” she said. According to Stackhouse, spring is the one season where California gets multiple different types of weather. “Because in California, it’s almost always all rain or all sun,” she said about the weather variation during spring.

Jalayah Rice

Jalayah Rice is a senior at BHS, which according to her, makes spring a lot more fun. “I say it just gets very active,” she said, “You have so much to do, especially as a senior, I feel like it kind of gets fun around this time.” Rice likes all of the activities that seniors get to do at the end of the school year — she mentioned senior skip day, going to the beach, senior assassin, and prom. “It kind of starts to get summer vibes. Everything starts to get fun again,” Rice said.

Natalia Zarate

BHS junior Natalia Zarate loves spring fashion. She likes the colorful fashion, and how she doesn’t need to layer. “I also really like getting to wear tank tops and skirts,” she said, “I just think that the environment gets a lot happier and a lot prettier.” Additionally, Zarate enjoys outdoor spring activities. “Spring makes me want to go outside more. And so I like to go on walks. I like to read on my porch. I like to hang out with my friends a lot more in spring,” she said.
