Berkeley High School senior Armin Schneider turned in a performance for the ages at the 2026 USA triathlon nationals, crossing the finish line among the top finishers twice. In the Olympic distance, Schneider surged to a silver medal, holding off the field over the 32-mile swim-bike-run gauntlet to stand on the second step of the podium. Less than a day later, he lined up again for the sprint distance, where he powered to an impressive fourth-place finish, narrowly missing out on hardware in a tightly contested race. Schneider attributes a large part of his success to his swimming background. “Swimming gave me the cardio necessary for the run and bike, and it gave me the confidence I needed to commit to the sport in the first place,” he said. Still, his success stems from more than just his experience in the water. Schneider often trains seven days a week, with two or three workouts each day. “It’s definitely hard to balance,” Schneider said, noting that he often has to sacrifice time with friends after school, and frequently isn’t able to start homework until late into the night. Despite navigating the many demands, Schneider has his sights set on the upcoming Junior Triathlon World Championships in Hamburg, Germany where he will represent Team USA on the world’s stage.
