Bo Speirs is a Berkeley High School senior who has spent the last four years on BHS’s varsity tennis team. He began playing tennis in fifth grade, whilst he was still playing competitive soccer. He began to feel burnt out from it and found tennis as a side sport that he ended up enjoying more. “Tennis is most definitely like an escape for me. I feel super stress-free when I’m playing it. It’s definitely a way to cool off and a really good thing for my mental health.” Speirs now coaches tennis to younger players on public courts, aiming to break down the barriers typically associated with white-privileged private tennis clubs. “It felt like I was kind of like preparing the next generation of Berkeley High (school) tennis players, which is super, super fulfilling for me.” Speirs’ goal is to make the sport more accessible and inclusive to all aspiring players, regardless of their background or financial means.
