Laufey Lín Bing Jónsdóttir, who goes by the musical name Laufey, released a new album on Friday, Aug. 22, 2025 titled “A Matter of Time.” Laufey has released two past albums: “Bewitched” and “Everything I Know About Love.” She is an Icelandic singer who has gained popularity in recent years. In this album, Laufey dives into topics of love and how her identity as a woman fits into that. The album consists of 14 songs, following a more unique organization because it represents the entirety of a relationship, with each song being a different stage.
Throughout the album, Laufey sings in a longing alto that compliments the thematic topics of the album well. She starts off the album with a song entitled “Clockwork,” which speaks to how it feels to fall in love and be in a romantic relationship with someone who loves you back. The song is short and uses clock sounds to weave in the element of time.
As the album continues, her story unfolds as well. Once we make it to “Forget-Me-Not,” she sounds more exasperated. She sings about her regrets and general frustrations. The next song, “Tough Luck,” speaks to the end of a relationship. She delves into how the pieces fall apart and signs that the relationship is over. She sings about how she feels and acts when she notices these signs, singing, “I’ll break it first, I’ve had enough of waiting ‘til you lie and cheat.” The song has a sense of aggression to it as well.
In “Mr. Eclectic,” Laufey speaks more to her partner and their flaws, talking about her indignation while droning to a sweet piano. She sings about how a man thinks he is all that, but he is a “poser.” The upbeat piano and percussion provides a juxtaposition to give context for the listener, helping to understand that while Laufey sees the flaws now, there was a time at which those flaws were disguised as love.
Her final song, “Sabotage,” starts out softly, but builds with large drums, trumpets, and a whole chorus. She sings about her own issues and insecurities within relationships. The song gets personal, speaking about how she believes it is herself ruining the relationships she has been in.
The album constructs an intimate narrative into how Laufey interacts with and experiences relationships. With her melodic voice and flirty instrumentals, and each song detailing a different element of a past relationship, the album provides a fresh take. “A Matter of Time” encourages the listener to keep going, song after song, in a world where many artists are producing songs made to be listened to on their own.
