Samuel Fesseha, a Berkeley High School junior, developed a passion for shot put at age seven. The track and field event involves throwing a heavy ball (a shot) as far as possible. The family aspect of his sport is something Fesseha especially cherishes. “My older brother brought me to a practice one day, and the coach suggested I try it, and I’ve been doing it ever since,” Fesseha said. His older brother has inspired him, constantly holding him accountable and motivating him to do his best. Fesseha also enjoys the team dynamic, describing it as another layer of family, “We all have a good community. All practices are never too serious. We hang out outside of practice, it’s like a family bond.” He hopes to continue his athletic journey in college.

Growing up as a dancer, Castillian looked up to many Olympic gymnasts. “I grew up watching Simone Biles and a lot of athletes online and on TV, and I feel like that really inspired me,” she explained. Whether she’s choreographing routines for the team, or perfecting stunts, Castillian’s skills and leadership are key to the team’s success. Keanu Moss is a BHS junior and a varsity baseball player. He plays shortstop and third-base, and defines his role on the team as “being the leader of the infield and in charge of communicating with the outfield.” For Moss, the best part of playing baseball is the strong bonds he’s built with his teammates, forged through grueling practices and shared moments of fun. His father introduced him to the sport when he was only six and would play catch with him in their backyard. Moss has played on many different club teams, and last year was his first time playing at the varsity level. To hone his skills, he regularly practices in the batting cages, always striving to improve his game.
