Berkeley High School senior Emmett Price rows crew. The BHS crew team’s training includes practices on the water and practices on rowing machines. On the water, the crew team wears a trou (a specific type of tight-fitting shorts for rowing) and/or a unisuit. “In the boat, the seat slides back and forth. And if you have loose clothing, it’ll get caught. So you have to wear tighter things. It’s also for comfort, because you’re doing a lot of movement back and forth,” Price said.

BHS sophomore and soccer player Yayra Adeborna typically wears a T-shirt and shorts made of athletic material to practice, but sometimes opts for a sweatshirt and sweatpants on colder days. “For school season, you typically wear (BHS) gear that is available on their website. And then for club soccer, you usually wear your club practice shirt,” Adeborna explains. She also mentioned that she generally avoids attire made from cotton when playing.

Jayceon Atkins, a BHS junior and football player, wears a compression shirt and shorts to practice as base layers underneath shoulder pads and other protective equipment. “(For BHS football) you have a practice jersey, a game jersey, and practice pants and then game pants,” Atkins said. The structured uniform helps maintain a sense of team unity and professionalism, in addition to providing football players with proper safety gear.

Benny Vu, a BHS sophomore and baseball player, wears an athletic jersey, baseball pants, and cleats to practice. Baseball pants, in particular, are an essential part of any baseball player’s gear. Vu noted that his baseball pants are made from a material that allows him to slide to bases. They are designed with durable material protecting against scrapes and abrasions during slides and other plays. “For baseball pants, I really like Under Armour, and I like Adidas cleats,” Vu said.
