Molly Birbach, a BHS junior, loved seeing the moment between track and field runners Lex and Leo Young, and Simeon Birnbaum, after Birnbaum won a close mile event at Nike Outdoor Nationals. Birnbaum held up his finger toward his opponents as he passed them and ultimately won. “He shrugged and he shushed him … it just makes me laugh and I feel like there’s been some really great merch created out of it,” Birbach said.
King Bazinga, a BHS freshman, said that one of his favorite moments in the media was the recent speculation at the Cesar Awards, a French film ceremony that Jim Carrey attended. Due to his altered appearance, fans speculated and a big theory was developed that there was a doppelganger who was impersonating Carrey at the awards ceremony. “I think it’s interesting … I mess with Jim Carrey,” Bazinga said.
Berkeley High School sophomore Maia Wilsey’s favorite pop culture moment was a circulating video of McKenna Grace, who began as a child actor. Wilsey said, “When she was interviewed, and they asked, ‘What do you do on set?’ And she’s like: ‘I’m acting, I’m an actor.’” This was filmed in 2016, at a premiere where a reporter seemingly hadn’t understood that Grace was the star of the movie.
Stella Eisen, a BHS junior, reflected on an older video filmed of Addison Rae, a popular influencer on various social media platforms, especially in the early 2020s. “Someone said ‘stay hydrated’ to Addison Rae and she goes ‘Hi Drated!’ ... I think it’s really funny and I reference that daily,” Eisen said. This video recently went viral, with many people using its audio as a sound for their own reactions or posts.
