American citizen Renée Good was fatally shot while inside of her car by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent Jonathan Ross on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2026. The event took place in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and has gathered nationwide attention, including protests against the killing.
Videos posted on social media showed Good and her wife inside of a maroon Honda Pilot waving on other drivers to pass. Shortly after, a truck filled with federal agents pulled up next to Good’s car and got out to approach her. Ross stepped in front of the Honda as the vehicle had begun to move ahead and pulled out his gun, firing at the driver as she continued to drive past him. The Honda accelerated before crashing into a telephone pole. Ross approached the vehicle and then walked away, telling the other agents to call 9-1-1.
Good was in the car with her wife when she was shot, and they had been raising a six-year-old son together.
President Donald Trump and other federal officials have claimed that Ross had acted in “self-defense.” Minnesota officials, including Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, have described these federal accounts as “propaganda,” and “bulls---.”
Initially, state law enforcement officials said there would be an investigation into the killing, however on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026, they said it was no longer possible since federal agencies had denied them access to evidence.
Protests across Minneapolis have led to Governor Tim Walz activating the state’s National Guard. Troops have not yet been deployed, however, and according to Walz’s office this is only “out of an abundance of caution.”
This shooting comes in the wake of increased ICE presence in many major cities, and has caused widespread backlash.
