Pride parades started out as displays of activism, declarations of presence, and yes, celebrations of community and identity. “Gay Pride” did not come into use as a common phrase until the ’80s, at least a decade after the first march.

A Guide For Non-Queer People of Color on How to Support QPoC 101:  1. Ask for pronouns: It can seem awkward at first, but asking someone for their pronouns up front can help avoid a lot more awkwardness and the potential of harming someone by misgendering them.
