Despite the school year just beginning, the Berkeley High School football team has been preparing for the season with practices all summer. Many seniors are looking forward to their final year of high school football, including quarterback Christopher DeVito. He has very high expectations for the team’s outcomes this year, saying, “The team’s put in a lot of work in the summer, and I think it’s gonna pay off.” With football being an injury prone sport, DeVito’s biggest hope for the season is that his teammates are able to stay healthy.

With matches starting in just a few weeks, the girls water polo team is excited to see what this upcoming season has in store. Many novices have joined the sport recently and senior Izzy Zimmerman hopes that more members will help the team strengthen and bond. “We have a lot of newer players, so I think we might spend more time focusing on actual gameplay and rules,” Zimmerman explained, “but I still have high hopes for the season.”

With practices underway, both girls and boys cross country teams are readying themselves for races. This year, both squads are signed up for two invitational races that BHS has never competed in before. BHS junior runner Luca Small is currently training, hoping that he can perform well at North Coast Sectionals and help the whole team compete at a state level. “I’m really excited to race a lot of fun invites with my team and to get deeper into this training block,” Small expressed.

The newest team sport at BHS, flag football, is making some big changes this year with the addition of a junior varsity squad for the very first time. There have also been many rule changes implemented within the sport, the results of which the team is yet to see. Senior player and running back Whitney Borovicka spoke regarding these rule changes, saying, “The game will actually be played a lot differently, so it’ll feel like a new sport in some ways and I’m excited to learn new things.”
