Latin-American roots constitute a significant dimension of the national art form which is jazz. One of the most prominent Latinx jazz musicians in the Bay Area is John Santos.

“A lot of the newer generation is becoming more accepting about queer and Hispanic, but people who are older and have been around for longer haven’t really been exposed to it since they’re used to their more traditional ways,” said Bex Campillo Quitano, a junior in Arts and Humanities Academy.

Student entrepreneurs run businesses built on their passions

Berkeley High School students often go above and beyond in honing their skills and following their passions. Some students have even taken it upon themselves to start their own businesses and experiment with entrepreneurship.  Corina Blanton, a BHS sophomore, found a passion for baking at a very young age.

Why  do substitute teachers at BHS do it?

Many students at Berkeley High School see substitute teachers around campus on a daily basis. Substitute teachers are a vital part of ensuring that teachers are able to take days off when they need to, and students are able to continue their learning, even in the absence of a teacher.

What was your first musical memory

Lily Lampach, a senior in Academic Choice, was reminded of her experience watching the musical “Frozen”. “Elsa and Anna singing about how they like to ‘let it go,’” she said, was particularly captivating at the time.

“It’s a lot of things to adjust to it’s such a huge campus compared to my old school … I’m trying to get the lay of the land, you know, what are the norms?” said Justin Valencia, a new Berkeley International High School Global History and IB History of the Americas teacher.

How did you find your closest friends at BHS?

“We’ve been hanging out as family friends and then at school,” said Rubèn Murillo, a senior. Despite an incident where he destroyed his friend’s favorite toy, a fire truck, Murillo still sees him regularly to this day.
