How the Shelter in Place Order Is Affecting Berkeley

  • As of March 27, 2020, there have been 14 confirmed cases of Coronavirus in Berkeley.

  • A teenager skates through the empty parking lot at the North Berkeley BART Station. BART has seen a 92% drop in ridership due to COVID-19.

  • California has been under a shelter-in-place order since March 19, 2020. It requires residents to have "official business" to go outside. This includes shopping for groceries, exercising, and collecting materials needed to work from home.

  • UC Berkeley has canceled in-person classes.

  • AC Transit has taken precautions to protect the health of passengers and drivers, such as making all trips free so that riders can use the rear entrance.

  • Cal Performances, which operates out of Zellerbach Hall, has cancelled their 2019-2020 season.

  • Almost all the businesses on Center Street are closed. Only a few are offering takeout.
